European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
