This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a test for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional body horror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple relocate from the big city to the country for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.
